Since its inception over 50 years ago, the mainframe operating system (today’s z/OS) has relied on logically organized areas of virtual storage, called control blocks, to communicate, keep track of operations, data, and services, and provide structure to z/OS functions. The hundreds (or even thousands) of control blocks are fundamental to every program that is executed—and some are more important than others. This month, we’ll consider some of the most basic, widely used control blocks related to system functions, job- and task-related resources, allocation and storage management, and I/O operations, along with some techniques to find and display them.
